Hoax forces evacuation at Dubai Cargo Village

Bomb hoax at the Dubai Cargo Village Sunday afternoon led to evacuation of the premises for more than an hour.

Acting on a tip-off, officials evacuated part of the cargo village at around 1.10pm on Sunday. However after a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the information was hoax and the employees were allowed back into the premises.

A spokesperson confirmed the incident and said that it was a routine incident and standard operating procedures were followed.

“Yes, indeed there was an evacuation. The incident occurred at around 1.10pm and the the investigation was complete by 2.30pm. Cargo village has resumed operations now,” said the official.

An official from AAB Cargo said employees at the Village were asked to rush out of the premises. “We were told that it was a bomb threat. It is great that it was just a hoax,” he said.

Another official from a major cargo company operating within the premises said that operations were stalled for an hour. “But now the situation is normal and work has resumed. Officials are stricter now, especially after the recent incident. They do not want to take any chances,” he added.

Officials in Dubai last month confiscated an explosive device that was planted on a printer and was supposed to fly on a Fedex flight to the US. Similarly another package was intercepted in England on a UPS cargo plane.

Dubai Police later confirmed that the bomb found aboard the FedEx plane contained highly explosive PETN and could have exploded on board the airplane had it not been intercepted in time.
