Sharjah traffic deaths dip 13.6% in Q1
The number of traffic accident deaths declined 13.6 per cent to 38 in the first quarter of this year compared to 44 in the same period of 2011, according to Sharjah Police statistics.
The number of UAE nationals who died in traffic accidents fell 57.1 per cent from 14 to six during the same period.
The number of traffic accidents declined 15 per cent from 220 to 187 while injuries dropped 30 per cent during the periods under comparison in Sharjah. Traffic violations declined 12.9 per cent.
Colonel Shawaf Mohammed Abdul Rahman, Director of Traffic and Patrol General Headquarters of Sharjah Police, attributed the reduction in the number of traffic accident deaths to Sharjah police’s policy of traffic education conducted through field campaigns that will last throughout the year, in addition to lectures and seminars in schools, universities and youth centres, as well as toughening penalties for traffic rule violations. Expansion of the network of fixed and mobile radars also helped reduce traffic accidents, he added.
