Souq Al Jubail sells an incredible 1.5m kg of fish in the last 6 months

Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Souq Al Jubail, said, “These figures confirm the excellent performance of the fish section in Souq Al Jubail, which is seeing high demand from consumers. With over 500,000 shoppers visiting every month, the souq management supplies 15,000 kg of fresh fish to the market every day. Local fish species increased to 80, while an increase of imported fish distributed and sold in the souq rose to 60 species. These are especially positive signs that the fish market is thriving.”

The top ten most popular fish sold at the market over this period were about 552,000 kg as follows the gargantuan 94 thousand kg of tuna; 93 thousand kg of red spot emperor (shekhali); 83 thousand kg of kingfish; and more than 70 thousand kg of brown spotted reef cod (hamour).

Also making the top ten list: shrimp, rabbit fish (sheri), trevally (jesh), allied kingfish (sekal), long finned bream (koffer) and emperor fish (safi).

“The fish cleaning and cutting service has contributed to the great performance of the fish section, increasing sale volume. In addition, to the comfortable shopping experience, central air conditioning and high tech designs,” added Al Suwaidi.

The fish section of Souq Al Jubail opens from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm and fish auction held daily following the Al Asr praying.

Sharjah Asset Management, the investment arm of the Government of Sharjah, opened Souq Al Jubail in December 2015, with the aim to provide an integrated shopping destination that meets the demands of Emirati citizens and residents for fresh meat, fish, vegetables and fruits at competitive prices.

The marketplace incudes three sections; one dedicated for selling fresh vegetables and fruits, the second for meat and the third for fish.

Strategically located in the heart of Sharjah City, close to the Central Market and opposite Sharjah’s central bus station, Souq Al Jubail is an Dh200 million development stretching over an area of 40,000 square feet.
