Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg turns 30
A college-dropout-turned-entrepreneur who created an iconic global technology powerhouse, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and chief executive of Facebook Inc., turns 30 on Wednesday.
His first brush with fame and notoriety came in 2003 when he caused a stir on the Harvard campus with a site called Facemash, which flashed two students’ photos so users could decide who’s hot and who’s not.
Facebook's birth itself was messy. Zuckerberg spent the early years of his career engaged in famous battles with people claiming a stake in his company, from the Winklevoss twins to a businessman who was later accused of fabricating a contract in which Zuckerberg supposedly promised him a 50% share of the social network.
Zuckerberg also launched Facebook with colleagues who later became controversial. There’s investor Sean Parker, who helped build Napster and who was later pushed out of Facebook after being arrested for cocaine possession.
He created an insanely popular social media service and was the subject of a major Hollywood motion picture, and he made more money than Steve Jobs did when he was the same age.
His concept changed the world of networking.

He was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2010; and he has become such an iconic figure in popular culture he achieved that ultimate accolade: a guest appearance on The Simpsons.

And while he has lost quite a few friends in the past decade — mainly in some well-known legal cases — it would be churlish to describe him as anything other than a social success.

At last count, he had just under 28 million followers on Facebook — and one wife (Priscilla).
