Baby trapped in bank vault for hours

A 14-month-old girl was trapped inside a bank vault for hours until a locksmith opened it, police said.

The baby wandered away from her mother and walked into the vault Friday night just before the Wells Fargo bank in the Atlanta suburb of Conyers, Ga., closed for the day.

Authorities responded to the "very tense" scene but were unable to free the child, as the safe was set on a time-released lock, said Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson.

Fresh air was pumped into the vault, and the child could be heard crying while a locksmith used a drill to open it. About four hours later, the infant was released to her mother, a bank employee.

The baby girl was unharmed, aside from a soiled diaper.
