BlackBerry launches new devices

It’s not just the Samsung Edge that has curves, BlackBerry has just unveiled a new device in the making to be launched sometime this year with two curved edges.

The BlackBerry Slider as it is called was showcased during a keynote presentation at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Blackberry also officially launched its Blackberry Leap – an upgraded version of BlackBerry Z3 and announced other new devices which include a luxury phone, designed in partnership with Porsche Design and codenamed 'Keian' in honour of Keian Blundell, the six year old boy who died of Leukemia.

With its strategy of coming out with devices both with the keyboard and full touch, the company is hoping to cater to different segments.

The Leap comes with a 4G LTE enabled device with a 5 inch screen with 1280 x 720 display, 8MP rear facing and 2MP front facing camera, 2800 mAh non-removable battery, Dual Core 1.5 GHz processor and 2GB RAM.

According to Ron Louks, President, Devices and Emerging Solutions, the device was built specifically for mobile professionals who see their smartphone for productivity and are keen to safeguard data.

“In today’s mobile world – influenced by trends like BYOD – where personal and corporate data are frequently under attack from hackers, companies and everyday consumers are finding out the hard way that mobile security is paramount,” said Louks.

The company recently launched its BlackBerry Classic which brought back the BlackBerry Bold design with the latest software upgrade. At the MWC it was also announced that the a white edition of the Classic will be rolled out this month followed by blue and gold versions in April.

However, more than its hardware it’s BlackBerry’s software expansion that’s making news.

Almost a year after BlackBerry expanded the BBM service onto other platforms like iOS and Android, BlackBerry has now rolled out the BlackBerry Enterprise Suite which includes a bouquet of key BlackBerry apps such as BB Hub and BBM into rival platforms.

What it means is that while BlackBerry will continue to invest in hardware and come out with BlackBerry devices, it will expand aggressively into other operating systems as well.
