Apple is said to be preparing to start production of a new, lighter iPad 5 soon. According to reports, trial production of the new iPad is scheduled to start within weeks while mass production will begin in July.

The new iPad 5 is also expected to be a quarter times less lighter compared to the iPad 4, thanks to a thinner glass and other significant changes in design.

According to a report published by Digitimes the new tablet will have a glass that will be 0.22 times thinner compared to the previous model.

Quoting sources within the supply chain the report also says that the new iPad will reach stores by September.

“The touch panel solution for 5th-generation iPad is GF2 instead of G/G bonding used in the previous iPad. The new iPad will use one LED light bar for backlighting, compared to two LED light bars used in earlier version,” the report said quoting sources.

Apple continues to dominate sales in terms of tablets and the trend is expected to continue.

According to latest figures Apple outperformed IDC’s most recent projections for the quarter, shipping 19.5 million units compared to a forecast of 18.7 million units.

Samsung is number two in terms of sales followed by Asus. The first quarter saw almost 49.2 million units of tablets sold.

Digitimes also said that Apple is hoping to sell at least two to three million iPads within the first month of the launch of the new product.
