LG and Samsung vie to unveil 105-inch curved TV… Who'll win?

South Korean technology giants LG and Samsung are both fighting it out to own credit for announcing the first largest curved UHD TV ever to be made.

First it was the LG that made the announcement that it will soon be unveiling the world’s first 21:9 aspect ratio curved UHD TV.

The model will be “announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. LG’s newest premium TV is also the company’s very first Curved Ultra HD model. The award winning groundbreaking 105-inch (measured diagonally) 105UB9 is officially the largest curved TV ever made,” the LG media release said.

It took less than 24 hours for Samsung to follow suit. The company came out with a statement announcing that it is unveiling “the World’s First, Largest and Most Curved 105” Curved UHD TV.

Both companies claim they will be unveiling their new models at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held in Las Vegas in January.

This is not the first time the two companies are fighting it out to take credit for being the first to unveil curved models.

LG first announced the 55-inch curved TV model and Samsung soon followed suit. Then Samsung was the first to announce the Samsung Round on October 9, when it termed its phone as the “the world’s first curved display smartphone.”

LG then followed it up with their own truly bendable smartphone the LG G Flex. And now this race for supremacy has been extended to the 105 inch segment.

Both models will come with 21:9 CinemaScope screen with an 11 million pixel (5120 x 2160) screen resolution.

LG says it has incorporated new technology and upgrading the TFT film circuit technology.

“In order to realise the TV’s curvature, new technology was introduced to resolve a number of issues, such as maintaining structural integrity and delivering uniform colour and brightness across such a large screen. Until now, OLED panels were preferred for curved displays due to their ability to generate their own light. LG Display overcame the challenge of uneven backlighting by refining its Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology to prevent color leakage and to ensure a superior viewing experience from virtually any angle,” the statement said.

Samsung, meanwhile, says its model is the most curved with the best possible viewing experience.

“As Samsung’s 105” Curved UHD TV is the world’s most curved, it provides almost two times vivid images when viewed from the side and the best possible TV viewing experience from any angle. Also, the 105 incher adopts ‘Quadmatic Picture Engine’ which delivers all content in UHD-level picture quality no matter what the source is.”
