A screen shot
Popular instant messaging app Whatsapp has been taken off the Windows Phone store after a series of crashes and complaints.
A search for the app on Windows phone store now simply says, “The app is no longer published.”
Facebook, which removed it from the Windows app store, however, has not given any official reason as to why it did so. A look at the user reviews on the Windows Phone store could probably reveal why the app was taken off.
All recent reviews indicate that the messenger has been crashing and requires immediate update.
The last time the app received an update was in January 2014. A user review by Gaurav on May 16 says, “Slow, lags, bugs, hangs.. Almost every possible problem.. I tried reinstalling.. Its shows backup failed and the app is not working.. Cant send msgs no groups no contacts.”
Another review by Younus yesterday (May 17) reads, “WhatsApp in Symbian is far better than windows. So many bugs. audio will close after playing 10 seconds. no option to upload audio files from SD card. app is too slow at starting etc etc,.”
While new downloads on Windows phone is not possible, existing users are able to continue to use the messenger but with most of the above mentioned errors.
The windows store is offering the messenger free the first year and is priced at $0.99 thereafter.
Facebook acquired Whatsapp for $19 billion and according to statistics published last month (April 23) the messenger has 500 million regular, active users around the world. In February it had about 450 million active users.
