HTC’s 7-inch tablet will be the first such device to use the Windows platform and will face stiff competition from Samsung, iPad mini and Kindle Fire.
Quoting sources familiar with the plans, the report said that HTC’s products, to debut in 2013, will be based on the Windows RT version of Microsoft’s operating system, designed for machines with chips using technology from ARM Holdings Plc (ARM).
HTC’s12-inch tablet will be bigger than Microsoft’s own Surface RT that has a 10.6-inch screen.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’ Surface Pro, a more powerful tablet running the full Windows 8 version, is a step closer to launch after it was approved by the American Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Last November, Microsoft had announced that it would launch the Surface Pro priced at $899 in January 2013.
