Iraq’s Baghdad governorate has awarded licences for 25 projects in housing and other sectors this year, its investment chief was quoted on Tuesday as saying.

The projects are part of a total 317 investment licences worth nearly $14.5 billion awarded by Baghdad since 2009, Shaker Al Zamli, chairman of Baghdad’s Investment Authority, told Iraq’s Arabic language daily Al Sabah.

“25 investments licences have so far been awarded this year….they cover housing, tourism, industry, health, trade and farming,” he said.

He did not elaborate on the licences awarded this year but said one of the projects to be executed in the capital involves the construction of 130,000 houses.

The licences offered since 2009 cover 65 tourism projects at a cost of about $1 billion, 37 industrial projects worth around $2 billion, 103 commercial projects, 14 in the health sector, and nine in farming, he said.
