Dubai Police has succeeded in catching a drug smuggler before he could bring 150,000 tablets of the banned drug ‘Tramadol’ into the UAE.
According to Major-General Abdul Jalil Mahdi Mohammed Al Asmawi, director-general of the Department for Combating Drugs of Dubai Police, the police had received information that a ship with a container containing the banned drug was set to leave the port of Jebel Ali for a country in East Asia.
On investigation, the police traced the owner of the container to the Al Awir area and was put under surveillance.
The ship arrived in Malaysia on January 21 and then moved to Singapore. The police then received information that the ship was on its way back to Jebel Ali and would arrive on February 18.
As the container was unloaded at Jebel Ali port, the owner of the container MUM, aged 43, was arrested. 150,000 tablets of Tramadol were found.
The accused admitted that he had bought the tablets for smuggling them into Malaysia but had brought them back to Jebel Ali because he could not land them in Malaysia at first attempt.
