Red tooth connection nabs bag snatcher

Two workers allegedly chased a woman into her building in Al Hamriya area, beat her up near the lift until she fell on the floor and snatched her bag before fleeing, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The victim, VN, 32, an Ugandan saleswoman, testified that at around 2am on December 24, she went down her building to go to the airport to say goodbye to her friend who was leaving the UAE.

“When I was waiting for a taxi, I felt cold so I decided to go up to my apartment to get a jacket. A man followed me and asked how much money I wanted for sex. I told him that I am not a prostitute and asked him to stay away.

“But he continued to follow me until I reached the lift and he persisted in asking for sex. When I tried to get into the lift, he pulled me by my shirt and I fell on the floor.

“Then he hit me several times on my head and back. I was screaming for help. He snatched my bag and ran away. I got up and ran after him. He handed over the bag to another man who was waiting outside the building.

“Some other men in the street ran after the accused. An Indian man called the police. After the police came, I got into their car and spotted one of the accused near a supermarket while searching the area. Police arrested him on the spot and the other accused later in the day,” she testified.

The victim had told the police she can recognize her attacker as he had a red tooth. A pedestrian who chased the man who fled with her bag helped the police to find the accused.

“He was wearing a yellow T-shirt and black shorts,” the pedestrian told the police.

Police raided a labour accommodation and confiscated the T-shirt and short which were on the bed. Other workers told the police that BAH, 22, Bangladeshi has just come in, changed his dress and went out.
When the police arrested the accused, he initially denied that the dress belonged to him, but admitted it after the victim and the witness recognized him. However, he denied stealing the victim’s bag which contained an iPhone and Dh105 in cash.

The court will give its verdict on May 30.
