Murder rates in the UAE are lower than Europe and USA, according to top official in Dubai Police who attributed such rates to the security environment, prosperity and freedom which residents and tourists are experiencing and enjoying in the country.
Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Maj. Dr Khaled Al Beraiki, Head of Mortuary at the General Department of Forensic and Criminology at Dubai Police said that the murder rate in the UAE is 2.6 for every 100,000 of population.
This is lower than most European countries where the rate is 3 for every 100,000 of the population according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) statistics.
“Murder rates here are also lower than Asian countries where the rate for every 100,000 of the population is 2.9, African countries where the rate is 12.5, and American continent where the rate is 16.3.”
He confirmed that this rate is lower than the world average rate for murder which is 6.2 for every 100,000 of the population.
Maj. Dr Al Braiki explained that the efficiency of police services in the UAE also plays a major role in achieving such low rates.
“Mortuary is one of the largest sections of the General Department of Forensic and Criminology at Dubai Police. It is fully equipped to receive the corpse. We have special rooms to save the cadavers and freezers in addition to rooms provided with tables to conduct the medical examinations (virtual and anatomical), x-ray and photographic, and take samples for laboratory tests.”
He pointed out that there are also places to keep biological specimens and exhibits.
“The capacity of the morgue is enough to meet the needs of the emirate, and also there other places (morgues of hospitals) in case there were large numbers of bodies.”
He revealed that the mission of the mortuary section begins after transferring the corpse from the place which witnessed the death.
He added that to conduct the forensic work (virtual or anatomical examination), they need an official letter from Dubai Police and the instructions of the Public Prosecutor.
“Deaths are divided into natural and criminal causes which are due to murder or suicide.”
He added the late discovery of a dead body hinders discovering the actual cause of death due to decomposition and the removal of tissue which leaves only remnant bones.
“The coroner has the ability to detect the causes of deaths and he can distinguish between a person falling from a high place whether it was suicide, an accident, or if the victim was deliberately pushed by someone else.”
He added that this is done through the analysis of the injuries in the body of the dead person as these are different in each case.
“Also the forensic doctor examines traces of clothing to indicate whether there is tearing of clothes from a fight with another before the fall.
“The doctor also indicates the time of death, and the position of the corpse on the ground, and the compatibility of such status with the premise of falls (natural or criminal).”
They also use samples from the victim to see if he was a drug addict.
Maj. Dr. Al Beraiki said that there are challenges facing forensic medicine at present.
“There is a need to discover new ways to increase efficiency in the autopsy and finding evidences, such as the use of body fluids to determine the time of death, and using nano-technology in examining the traces and evidences.”
