Construction work of the Rawiyah bus depot project will be completed in June, according to the Chairman and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
During an inspection of the Dh400 million project, Mattar Al Tayer said more than 75 per cent of the project has finished and spans several phases. Phase one, which costs about Dh205m, covers construction of a bus parking yard for 295 buses (144 standard buses and 151 articulated buses), an electromechanical workshop to house 20 buses at a time, supply line for 12 buses, and a washing and cleaning unit for 20 buses at a time.
Phase two comprises construction of an administrative building for 40 employees and a drivers' quarters with a capacity to accommodate 444 drivers. It also includes construction of investment buildings spanning an area of 3005 square metres, comprising restaurants and retail outlets in addition to a mosque.
"These projects are part of an integrated plan to overhaul public buses network that aims to enable public transport users' smooth mobility to any destination in Dubai," said Al Tayer. "This covers procurement of new buses and construction of air-conditioned bus shelters for bus commuters throughout Dubai. So far, 770 shelters have been constructed and 440 are operational. It also includes construction of bus depots at Jebel Ali, Rawiyah, Khawaneej and Al Aweer and bus passenger stations at Al Qouz, Satwa and Karama."
Work continues on the construction of bus depots at Khawaneej and Jebel Ali, where RTA has completed all works under phase one of Jebel Ali bus depot project, including construction of the surrounding enclosure, local roads, bus stops and public utility networks such as water, electricity, sewage and irrigation.
