Al Futtaim Tarmac has implemented a near-miss reporting initiative award across the Middle East to encourage safety on sites.
Local business managers will judge the winners, who will feature on posters displayed in each business unit. They will also receive Dh100 or equivalent in local currency from their line manager. By the year-end, a winner will be picked from the monthly winners.
"We must all continue to be vigilant and encourage the reporting of near misses and continue to build on our safety culture for the benefit of all," said the company in Build Safe UAE (BSU) alert.
BSU is a not-for-profit organisation, which is aimed at improving the health, safety and welfare conditions of all construction industry stakeholders through the free exchange and sharing of information. The body currently has 58 compliant signatory member organisations and 22 affiliated non-signatory member organisations.
In an incident report, a site inspection revealed that several cranes did not have the crane out-rigger visual markers to show that the out-riggers were extended to the correct position.
On examination it was discovered that some crane out-riggers were not fully extended. This could possibly result in the crane tipping over leading to injury or death, warned the BSU alert.
On investigation it was also discovered that one of the causes for the crane out-riggers not being fully extended was lubrication and maintenance.
The operator continued to work although the crane outriggers were not operating in a proper manner.
