Areva 400kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear bays. (SUPPLIED)
Areva's transmission and distribution division (T&D) has won an order worth about €90 million (Dh406.7m) to supply a 400/132 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) for Transco, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority.
Areva T&D will deliver the GIS substation, which will strengthen power supply for the fast-growing Northern Emirates. It will be located in Ajman, where the population is expected to increase from 250,000 in 2010 to 2.2 million in 2030, according to estimates from the UAE Ministry of Economy.
The substation solution also includes the delivery of four power transformers, four shunt reactors, a digital control system and a telecommunications system along with protection relays.
Karim Vissandjee, CEO, Areva T&D, said: "This success is another step forward in our ongoing regional development. Our local team is proud to contribute to a project that increases the availability and reliability of the power grid, expanding the much-needed capacity in the UAE." The project is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
