BSU reinforces safe work plan

Recently, while the crane erection team was dismantling an onsite tower crane, washers were not caught by the crane erectors. The washer instead hit the crane frame, bounced outward in an arc and struck an electrician, who fractured his arm.

Buildsafe UAE (BSU) Safety Alert 228 recommended the exclusion zone should be increased to take account of cruciform base and the sequence of work and prohibition of entry into exclusion zone be reinforced among other preventive actions.

On another site, a 2 metre-high scaffolding collapsed and two masons suffered minor injuries. Upon investigation, it was revealed the cause of the collapse was the unauthorised modification of the structures. Buildsafe UAE recommended a safe work plan be prepared and communicated to all and work be carried out under competent supervision.

Meanwhile, in order to ensure the safe management of all cylinders on site, Ascon has provided designated locations for storing oxygen, acetylene and LPG cylinders for all sub-contractors on their project.

After the completion of the hot works, the cylinders are de-pressurised and stacked accordingly in the designated cylinder storage area and secured with chains to avoid toppling.

As a best practice, the HSE Department of Six Construct confirms and then communicates the BSU safety alerts through the entire workforce every week. It also implements preventative measures to all affected work areas or site activities to prevent accidents from repeating on their projects.
