Retail prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are to drop by up to 11 per cent starting today, the first reduction since June.
Emirates Gas, which is a subsidiary of Emirates National Oil Company (Enoc), has sent a notification of the reduction to distribution outlets in Dubai.
"There is a drop in the price of LPG cylinders in effect from November 6," an Enoc official told Emirates Business.
"This is the first drop in cooking gas prices since June. We were officially notified about the new prices by Emirates Gas, covering the three different sizes we sell to the public," said a source at Honest Hands Gas Trading and Distribution in Dubai. This is good news and we hope further reductions will take place as our consumers have been complaining about the rising price of cooking gas over the past few months."
Prices are also coming down at Emarat Gas, another gas distributor owned by Emarat. An official at Emarat said: "Due to the worldwide drop in the prices of natural gas, we have planned to cut the prices of LPG cylinders."
LPG cylinders come in three sizes in Dubai. Under the new reduced prices, an 11kg cylinder, which was priced at Dh65, will now be available at Dh58 – a 10.8 per cent drop. The 22kg cylinder will now sell for Dh96, an 8.6 per cent drop compared to its earlier price of Dh105, while the 44kg cylinder will drop 8.8 per cent from Dh216 to Dh197.
A 20 per cent increase in LPG cylinder prices took place in June. "Since then, there has not been any reduction and we would welcome it now. The rise had placed a greater burden on our cost of operations," said the manager of the procurement department at a restaurant in Dubai.
The drop in crude oil prices from near $150 in July to $65 this week had earlier prompted retailers Enoc and Emarat to reduce their diesel prices, followed now by natural gas.
