FRANKFURT German luxury car maker BMW said yesterday that its unit sales rose by 10.8 per cent last month from the May 2009 level, preserving its place as the world's leading premium auto manufacturer. A BMW statement said the group sold a total of 120,843 automobiles, of which 101,775 were BMW-brand cars.

Group deliveries through May rose by 13.3 per cent to 552,864 vehicles.

"The sales trend remains positive -- we reported healthy double-digit growth once again in May," sales director Ian Robertson was quoted as saying.

BMW's main rival, Daimler, said on Monday that it had sold 101,400 cars in May, for the most part Mercedes-Benz models, meaning that BMW remained the leader in the luxury car segment.
