Leaders at the 12th Consultative Summit of the GCC stressed the importance of removing all remaining obstacles to achieving the final agreement on the Gulf customs union.

At the bi-annual summit, held in Riyadh on Tuesday and chaired by King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, recommendations submitted by GCC interior and finance ministers, concerning the smooth transit of goods and trucks across borders in the Gulf, were approved. The move is expected to put an end to the buildup of cargo vehicles at border posts.

Security and stability in the region and the Middle East peace process were the main focus of the talks, with a range of other regional and international issues discussed by the leaders of the six GCC countries. A final statement issued by the leaders also called for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East.
