Al Salam City, a Dh30 billion project launched by Dubai-based real estate developer Tameer Holding in Umm Al Quwain (UAQ) has been put on hold, according to market sources.
"There is a water and electricity shortage in UAQ and so the project has been put on hold. And from March 1, we have stopped receiving any payments from customers. So there's no way you can buy something in Al Salam City," a company sales agent told Emirates Business. "The government is telling us they don't have enough resources to provide water and electricity for the city. We don't have an idea how long this hold period will go on for.
"The government told us they didn't know when the problem is going to be solved," he added.
Al Salam City was launched in July 2005 and was set to cover 220 million square feet. It was due to include around 1,000 buildings, Tameer's website said. Plans for the city included residential villas, parks, playing grounds and entertainment centres, apart from a colossal shopping mall.
In March, the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, ordered the allocation of Dh16bn to develop infrastructure in the Northern Emirates. The move was aimed at accelerating economic progress in all the emirates.
