US teen sailor on world trip rescued from stricken yacht

American teenager Abby Sunderland was rescued yesterday from her stricken yacht in the Indian Ocean and is in good health, Australian officials said.

Sunderland, who hit trouble during a controversial solo round-the-world trip, was taken on board fishing boat Ile De La Reunion after drifting for two nights in rough seas thousands of kilometres from help. "The rescue of 16-year-old US solo sailor, Abby Sunderland, from the yacht Wild Eyes to the fishing vessel Ile De La Reunion was successfully conducted at 7:45pm today," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said.
