Sheikh Zayed Road was closed for hours yesterday, causing traffic chaos, after part of a crane collapsed on to a traffic sign.

No one was injured in the early-morning incident, which involved a crane belonging to Metro contractor.

"The Roads and Transport Authority in conjunction with police closed the section between the first interchange and the Trade Centre Roundabout, thus preventing inbound traffic from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali from using that stretch, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of road users," said Abdul Majeed Al Khaja, CEO of the RTA Rail Agency. As soon as the incident happened, the RTA's Emergency Team rushed to the scene and with the support of Dubai Police patrols traffic was diverted to Al Khail Road and Al Wasl Road.

Police patrols directed motorists inbound from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali to Al Safa Interchange, where they joined Al Khail Road to the east or Al Wasl Road to the west. Motorists driving across Sheikh Zayed Road's first interchange were diverted to Business Bay Road and Al Wasl Road.

The RTA used special equipment to cut the collapsed part of the crane into pieces so it could be lifted away and the scene cleared.
