The General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE) has stated that reports run by local media that it has prohibited the public use of vuvuzelas, the horns used by spectators in stadiums, are ''inaccurate''.

In a clarification issued on Monday, the authority said the published reports and quotes on the issue had distorted and twisted the text of the fatwa (religious ruling) and given it a different headline that had misled the public.

The GAIAE affirmed that the fatwa, which was posted on its website on June 2, 2010, does not forbid vuvuzelas. On the contrary, it sanctions their use and trade in them.

The fatwa allows the use of these horns in stadiums but the importer or trader must limit the amount of sound to below 100 decibels, to limit damage to people’s hearing.
