More than 10,000 expired and defective Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders were seized and exchanged in Sharjah by the Commercial Control and Protection Department, an affiliate of the Sharjah Economic Development Department (Sedd).

"These LPG cylinders were reported as unsafe for use and posed great risks. LPG cylinders are valid for use for a maximum of 15 years and should either be put out of service or requalified after that. Expired cylinders pose a danger to consumers and refillers unless they are exchanged in co-operation with the parties concerned," the Sedd said in a statement.

The announcement was made during a recent meeting the Sedd held with LPG manufacturers and refillers operating in the emirate, upon completion of a campaign that took place over the past few months.

Sedd General Manager Ali bin Salem Al Mahmoud said: "Firms played an excellent role in removing expired LPG cylinders from the market. Co-operation by the manufacturers of LPG cylinders, as well as by users, also significantly contributed to making the campaign a success. Consumers who informed us of expired and defective cylinders delivered to their homes or restaurants played a vital role, too."

The initiative formed part of the department's continuous efforts to ensure compliance with consumer protection standards in the marketplace.
