Civic inspectors last month seized 441 street vendors, beggars and car washers as part of a crackdown on illegal activities. The operation also uncovered low-quality goods, pirated DVDs and pornographic movies.

The Dubai Municipality inspectors, working with the police and the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, conducted daily spot checks in public places and booked anyone found breaking a Ministry of Labour ruling forbidding street trading. In March, they caught 304 street vendors, 44 beggars, 63 car washers and 30 illegal butchers and fish cleaners.

A total of 329 counterfeits products, including ready-made garments, perfume, cameras and watches, were confiscated. In addition 3,547 pirated movie DVDs, 216 pornographic films and 377 foodstuff items, including rice, tahina, oil and boxes of fruits and vegetables, were seized.
