Bringing the garbage back into the house

Amazing, the things you can do with your garbage these days.

Kilos of assorted cutlery, for example, make the perfect conversation piece when meshed together into a metal cube, which would look well in that corner you didn't know what to do with. As might one of the contemplative abstracts cast from scrap iron.

If it's an empty wall you want to fill, a nice mixed-media work featuring artfully torn scraps of paper, which could double as a Rorschach inkblot test, could well inspire you.

Or, if you're the sort who believes art must be functional, one of the witty chairs that doubles as a bookcase should make your day.

Some 60 pieces by artists from 15 nations are on display at BurJuman as part Re-Art, a Unesco-awarded event showcasing art created from aluminum cans, scrap metal, plastic, paper waste and all kinds of junk. Organised under the umbrella of the Dubai Summer Surprises, the event aims to promote the idea of sustainability in industrial societies and inspire consumers to buy products made from recycled waste.

Re-Art. At Burjuman Centre until August 11. Call 600 54 5555.
