Apple back with tasty device

Great, even if you don't like Macy Gray. (SUPPLIED)

Thank goodness for Apple. If there's one company that has understood the needs of the MP3, sorry, I mean MP4 generation, it has been Apple.

We had the good old reliable iPod, which resembled a brick, followed by the cutesy-coloured iPod minis, then, of course, there was the iPod nano that introduced a full colour screen.

It's funny how these aren't on the market anymore despite the fact they were only released between 2002 and 2005. Just goes to show how people are obsessed with technology.

Now to follow the release of the iPod Shuffle, which I never was a particular fan of (not having a LCD screen irritates me), comes the iPod Touch: the daddy of all music players. Oh yes!

Okay, so these were initially released last September, but with Apple's vice-president of the iPod and iPhone, Greg Joswiak, saying that for some users, there's never enough memory, Apple has returned with three versions of the iPod Touch: 8GB, 16GB and 32GB – the 16GB being their latest addition.

I got my hands on a brand new 16GB-sized version, and it's an absolute beauty. Like the iPhone, it features Apple's unique "multi-touch" user interface, so you can access music, movies and the software you need at the touch of a finger.

Let's start with music. Gone are the days where you select the tune you want to listen to, because now, it is all about interactivity.

The device features the clever Cover Flow, which allows you to find the album you want to hear, by choosing the album cover, then tapping the cover to view the tracklist.

What's more, you can also have the option of reading the lyrics as you listen to each tune, providing you add them to the player.

The same goes for watching videos, and the 3.5-inch display offers a viewing experience no other iPod has had. Plus, you can also watch video podcasts.

Meanwhile, not only is the iPod Touch about multimedia downloads, it also features one of the most advanced mobile web browsers to ever grace a music player. In-built with Safari, all you need is a wi-fi connection, and you're ready to go. The device even has applications including mail, maps and notes, although the maps application is very fiddly to use so I gave up in the end.

All in all this is really all you need, if not more, in a music player, and you can use it everywhere; you won't need any other type of music device. Apple – you have done it again.
