Today in History
April 25, 2003 The international scientific endeavour to map the human genome – the Human Genome Project – was completed, two years ahead of schedule.
HGP's primary goal was to determine the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up DNA – the building blocks of life – and to identify and map the 20,000 to 25,000 genes of the genome, both physically and functionally.
The project began in 1990, initially headed by James D Watson at the US National Institutes of Health. A 'rough draft' of the genome was finished in 2000.
