As Dubai’s skyscrapers get higher and higher, so do the maintenance fees imposed on the emirate's already inflation-hit residents.
Developers claim the charges – which normally cover building upkeep and security – are increasing because of the higher cost of labour and materials. Some say that the amount they charge owners is commensurate with the quality of their developments.
But few residents believe the quality of service is worth the spiraling charges. A recent Emirates247.com poll found that 88% of respondents think that “the quality of service is not worth more fees” or that developers “already charge more than enough”. In a city where cost of living is rising fast, some say that they would like the opportunity to decide for themselves whether or not paying for polished elevator mirrors is a financial imperative.
What do you think? Do developers succeed in justifying the recent increase in maintenance charges? Is the quality of maintenance and services worth it, or are residents being extorted? Have your say by submitting a comment below, or emailing us at news@emirates247.com. A selection of comments will be published in Emirates Business on 21 September.
