Vidya Balan a 'la Umrao Jaan'? The stage was set at Cannes for this 'oh la la' girl to break into a mujra (dance).

An elegant lady with a poor fashion taste, that’s Vidya Balan for you. Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee wanted to give her that different Indian traditional look, and guess what? The experiment failed on Vidya.

We love the fact that Vidya and Sonam wore their Indianness on their sleeve, so to speak, but we feel the two actress went a bit overboard with that veil and shrug like long jacket.

The designers in their effort to bring in India and Indianness in the fore-front with a mélange of western flavour; miss fired.

Sonam Kapoor should justify this - Will that nose ring make her look more Indian?

Sonam Kapoor wore a Anamika Khanna's couture saree. A beautiful piece with white lace combined with a shimmering white golden blouse. But what on earth is that shrug like long jacket? No doubt it was stormy at Cannes but Sonam struck us with that train which spoiled the elegant saree.

Amitabh Bacchan smiled on bravely wearing a black sequined tuxedo jacket with a bow-tie (a polka dot one at that, mind you!) that appeared sparkly and out of place amid the more sober attire of the other male stars and directors. Mr Bachchan spoke a few words in Hindi for the folks back home.

Mr Bachchans experiments with jackets started early in the day at Cannes. While his co-stars kept it simple, Mr. Bachchan’s dress code was rather flamboyant, he opted for a striped jacket with white pants and shoes at the photocall of the film "The Great Gatsby".

Along with the striped jacket, white pants and white shoes why did Amitabh Bachchan tie that belt on his waist?

There was more than a touch of India at the glittering opening ceremony of the 66th Cannes Film festival on Wednesday, but all that glitters is not gold Mr Bachchan!
