Dubai Diary: What to do this weekend?

Published
By Bindu Suresh Rai

Here’s yet another weekend that is making you dig into those purses and spend on pleasurable pursuits.

But if the week has been as stressful as ours has been, what with Madonna concert tickets, Elton John announcements and Russell Peters details spilling over, there is certainly cause for a holiday this weekend.

Thursday

Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012 (Men’s)

Sporting fans have been eagerly waiting for the most coveted event of the year, with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships having commenced at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.

Catch seven of the top 10 men’s players to centre court where they will vie for the title and a share of the $4 million total prize purse.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 2012 line-up of stars is shaping up to be as strong as previous years, and one where some of the world’s best will take on the up and coming stars, all of whom are focused on claiming both valuable ranking points.

Fans can expect to enjoy special 20th anniversary celebrations as the championships will look back on past stars achievements as well as exciting action on the court with extra seating on Court One for ticket holders to catch the extra games.

Dubai Duty Free will continue to run the increasingly popular Ladies’ Day activities, special children tennis clinics, as well as a variety of family-fun and entertainment over the two-week event.

It’s the last weekend and tickets cost Dh150, with matches starting at 2pm and 7pm; you don’t want to miss this if you are a fan.

The Mouse That Roared

It’s rare to find a comedy that has you cracking up from the start. “The Mouse That Roared” is here to prove just that, as the boys and girls from Backstage take us on a journey during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s, where a tiny European nation decides to lose a war against the United States in order to make a profit.

Join for good laughs in a lighthearted comedy presented by Backstage, Dubai's preeminent community theatre group.

The show is being staged at the Centrepoint Theatre, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai from March 1 until March 3.

Tickets are priced at Dh75. Show starts at 7.30pm Call: 050 924 4160

Charice Infinity Tour: Dubai

With a number one song on Billboard’s Dance Charts “Pyramid’, a top 10 pop debut last spring and a major role as exchange student Sunshine Corazon on the hit TV show “Glee”, there’s no doubt that Charice’s talents are now even bigger than even she imagined.

Currently billed as America’s hottest singing teen sensation, Charice rose to fame through YouTube, was also invited as a guest by Oprah Winfrey, who called her ‘the most talented girl in the world’.

If you want to catch her live, then head to the Festival Park, Al Badia Festival City, as 321 Events hosts this mega concert.

Tickets are priced at Dh95 and Dh195, with doors opening at 7pm. Call: 04 450 3505
