"It started getting popular around four to five years back, especially with college girls, they just love having dimples," said Dr Qassim Ahli

Dr Qassim Ahli, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Dermalase Clinic

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, the Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Dermalase Clinic, explained that the trend of dimpleplasty began in Bollywood as a lot of the Indian actors have dimples, then the fad moved over to Hollywood, before landing down in Dubai.

"Patients bring in photos of Arabic and Indian actors and actresses whose dimples they would like to imitate,  particularly the location and style of the dimple."

Most of Dr Ahli’s patients opt for the one-sided dimples rather than having them on both cheeks, and more so, the look of the dimple can be fashioned to appear in a certain way.

The surgeon explained: "The depth and length of the dimples can be controlled, and some people prefer round dimples while others go for the slightly elongated or oval kind of dimples."

Surprisingly, there are people who hate their natural dimples and consider them  a flaw.

Well, technically, a dimple really is a flaw! A flaw, or rather, a groove in the facial structure in the cheek.

How easy is it to actually get one of these so called 'flaws' of your own?

Dr Ahli gave us an insight into how simple his technique is.

"The patient is given a local anesthesia, so that area will be numb after 10 seconds, and then we place stitches from inside the mouth, without cutting anything from the tissues or muscles."

Dr Qassimi added: "The stitches from inside the mouth run under the skin, so it involves pulling the skin from inside to create a dimple under the skin, only by using the stitches."

The other procedures followed by other doctors involves removing a part of the cheek from inside the mouth, can take upto 40 minutes to an hour of surgery, whereas Dr Ahli’s technique lasts around three minutes.

With such a simple procedure to get lifelong results, the recovery period lasts between 5 days upto a week, but are there any risks involved?

Dr Qassim explained: "The risks are very minimal."

He added: "The chances of bruising, pain and infection with this procedure are very low as the surgery does not involve any cutting inside the cheek’s tissues and muscles, so there are no wounds."

The surgeon explained that the patients only have to wait 30 minutes after the procedure for the local anesthesia to wear off, and then have food and drinks as usual.
Most importantly, this technique, as opposed to the others out there, is reversible.

"If the patient is unsatisfied with the way the dimple looks, then it can be undone in one minute, by removing the stitches."

And the strangest request from patients?

Dr Ahli smiles as he recalls: "One of them asked me to create a dimple for her in the shape of a heart! It was a very strange request and she was really serious about it."

And did he go ahead with it?

"No!" he joked.
