The music world in India went silent after the sad demise of prominent gazal maestro Jagjit Singh.

Lata Mangeshkar who had a close association with the singer, hoped that he would recover from his illness. She was taken aback with the news of his death and considers it a great loss for the music world.

Singer Jagjit Singh passed away on Monday at a hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage (cerebral haemorrhage) at the age of 70.

Singer Asha Bhosle says she is in a state of shock after the news. The fact that the silken voice is no more is unimaginable for Bhosle and the audiences will now have to do with his old gazals.

An upset Usha Uthup added that she could not even begin to describe her sadness. Her association with the maestro has been long and she considers it as a personal loss. She goes on to say that Singh was not only an excellent singer but also a wonderful human being.

Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas said he was shattered. He had hoped for his recovery but the loss is devastating for him and the music world. He spoke about Singh's style and the way he revolutionised gazal in the mainstream.

The younger generation of singers also mourns his death. Writing on micro-blogging website Sonu Nigam tweets: "So sad to see the great Jagjit Singhji, losing the battle to death..Very unlikely for the strong willed person tht he was..God bless his soul". Sreya Ghosal also expresses her grief, she tweets : "Jagjit Ji passes away. One of the saddest day for all us music lovers. The golden voice will not sing anymore. Rest in peace".
