Actress Jiah Khan left a note before commiting suicide.
A court in India remanded the boyfriend of the late Bollywood actress Jiah Khan in custody Tuesday over accusations that his behaviour had helped drive her to commit suicide.
Suraj Pancholi, a 22-year-old aspiring actor, was brought before a court in Mumbai after police arrested him on Monday for "abetment to commit suicide", a week after his girlfriend's body was discovered at her home.
Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre-Patil told AFP that the charge was based on the contents of a suicide note found at Khan's Mumbai and from a statement by her mother.
Pancholi was remanded in custody by the court until June 13.
Khan, who made her debut starring opposite acting legend Amitabh Bachchan, was found dead in an apparent suicide on June 3.
The 25-year-old's parents found a suicide note in her wallet which reports said contained details of her troubled relationship with Pancholi.
Khan, born in New York before moving to London and then Mumbai, made her Bollywood debut in 2007 with the controversial film "Nishabd" (No words), playing a teenager in love with her best friend's much older father, played by Bachchan.
The movie won attention because of its provocative storyline and Khan was praised for her bold acting.
Khan, who changed her name from Nafisa Khan, went on to star alongside actor Aamir Khan in "Ghajini", a box-office hit.
India's film industry reacted with shock and sadness to her death, with superstar Aamir Khan saying he was "deeply pained".
Pancholi has been taking acting lessons and was set to make his own film debut, having signed to feature in the Salman Khan movie "Hero". He has previously worked as an assistant director.
Suraj Pancholi was arrested by Mumbai police after Jiah's mother filed a complain against him.
The 23 year old Suraj reportedly dated Jiah for nearly a year. He was the last person she spoke to on the phone, police said, before hanging herself in her Mumbai home on June 3.
Jiah was found hanging in her bedroom by her mother. The police had initially registered a case of accidental death claiming that Jiah was “depressed” and that no foul play was suspected.
However, the case took a dramatic turn after a handwritten note by Jiah was found in which she spoke of her traumatic relationship, a medical procedure she underwent and the physical and mental trauma she had suffered.
Jiah Khan's last note before suicide said: "You destroyed my life".
In the letter, which appears to be written to a former or present boyfriend, Jiah says, "If you're reading this I might have already left or about to leave. I am broken inside."
Emirates 24|7 is also in possession of an email sent by Jiah Khan's mother Rabiya Khan. The email begins: "Some sections of the media and some film industry people are speculating that my daughter Jiah committed suicide because of depression related to her career. However the truth is that it happened only because of the trauma and the abuse she suffered...
Rabiya had alleged that torture from Suraj led to Jiah’s death. Jiah’s mother filed a complaint alleging he had pushed her to take the drastic step.
The contents of the letter are heart-breaking and show a soul that is tortured and completely shattered by simply being in love.
As the case is being investigated by the police, Emirates 24|7 cannot make any assumptions about who is the lover that Jiah Khan refers to in the note.
However, a trail of heart-break - from a Goa trip to a lonely Valentine’s Day to a birthday dinner gone wrong – Jiah seemed unable to process the heart-ache and pain and in the end it was just too much for her.
