Pratyusha case: Actor was pregnant, may have undergone abortion

Published

As confirmed by JJ Hospital doctors in Mumbai, deceased 24-year-old Indian television TV actor Pratyusha Banerjee was pregnant not too long before her alleged suicide on April 2.

According to The Times of India, doctors reveal she had probably undergone an abortion. A histopathological examination of tissues from the uterus was conducted based on which, the revelation was made.

They quoted a source saying, "The findings showed that there was a conception few days or a month before her demise, and there was a premature death of the foetal cell. The products of conception, or the placental or foetal tissue in the uterus found following delivery, termination of pregnancy or a miscarriage, were infected and degenerated. That usually hints towards a secondary infection, probably occurring due to an attempt to terminate the pregnancy."

However, despite the tests, the doctors are finding it hard to establish the paternity of the foetus.

Since there are no tissues left or rather they were removed, it may be challenging to carry out a DNA test to establish the child’s paternity.

An exact gestational age could not be confirmed either, by the experts.

However, the doctor, who conducted the investigation, did not reveal the findings and said that the report has been handed over to the police.

Multiple departments are working simultaneously to determine the cause of Pratyusha’s death. So far, the investigators have a preliminary autopsy stating the cause of death as "ligature over the neck with asphyxia."

Chemical tests are being conducted to look for traces of poisoning and Pratyusha’s hair, nail and blood samples are being preserved for DNA analysis.
