Sublime to ridiculous: Vidya Balan's Cannes saree experiment flops

It is worrisome at times to see how desperately Indian actors try to make it work when it comes to dressing for the much touted red carpet appearance at Cannes Film Festival.

This year at Cannes rather than making a statement, the big Indian entourage looked as if they were attending a big fat Indian wedding.

Cannes jury member and Bollywood actress Vidya Balan got it right when she arrived for the jury meet in a maroon Sabyasachi Mukherjee number.

Vidya declared she will be seen only in saree and Sabyasachi at Cannes by turning up at the Jury Photo Call in a white sari and round blouse.

But looks like that was the end of Vidya's style testimony. From there on Vidya Balan continued her series of sari embarrassments starting from the opening ceremony.

Vidya went on a "Mughal princess" mood as she went for white and gold Sabyasachi lehenga and covering her head with the veil. The designer wanted to give her that different Indian traditional look, and guess what? The experiment failed on Vidya.

Vidya again wore a Sabyasachi creation on the second day of the festival. But more than her saree, it was her nose ring that attracted the eyeballs. Vidya swapped her Mughal princess look for a matronly sari. But what’s up with the nose ring? The huge nose ring does not gel with the hairdo or the outfit. She teamed up her golden off-white saree with huge bulky blue beads.

There’s no variation in Vidya's style – same hair, big shocking necklaces, same choice of sari. And full sleeved blouses all the time to hide the flab?

And the round neck cropped blouse has been Vidya's trademark of sorts. It has made an appearance in all of Vidya Balan’s Sabyasachi creations.

Vidya Balan arrived at the evening gala of the film 'Bombay Talkies' celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema wearing a mehendi colour (dark olive) saree. She tied her hair loose and changed from a stifling blouse, which made a lot of difference and she looked pretty as well. But obviously she could have been little tidy with her saree. She carried an embroidered potli with her sari and finished her look with huge antique earrings.

On the 6th day at Cannes it was difficult to fathom was Vidya on the red carpet or Vidya wearing the red carpet. A bright red floral Sabyasachi saree paired with the high-neck red blouse and strings of grandma pearls. She than matched the colour of the bag with the pearls.

Vidya Balan might be doing great as a Cannes jury member but her experimental streaks with saree is disastrous.
