It was a moment of glory for fans of Shah Rukh Khan, as the Bollywood star’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lifted the cup to win the Indian Premier League final last evening in a nail-biting finish against Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab.
However, the win was not limited to the pitch alone for the King Khan.
Pitted in a ‘VeervsZaara’ social media face-off against his co-star and friend, Zinta, the parody hashtag that paid tribute to one of the duo’s most popular films, also made it to the top 10 list on the Twitter charts.
For a teary-eyed Zinta after KKR’s three-wicket win, the onslaught was far from over as the juggernaut of Khan’s 7.84 million Twitter followers came down on social media with memes and jokes, some of which at her expense.
Nishant Kalra tweeted: “For the first time in the history of the world, the man in the relationship won the game #VeervsZaara”
Paresh Mestri wrote: “Preity Zinta it’s just like your first movie. You came second.”
Baloo said: “Even in the name of woman empowerment, SRK didn’t let Preity Zinta win.”
“Shah Rukh Khan says sorry to his Zaara for not sacrificing this time,” said Heartbeats4SRK.
Nikita Goel wrote: “Good to see finally Shah Rukh survived after he lost his life in ‘Dil Se’ and ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ against Preity Zinta.”
Ashish Pandey opined: “We have seen a lot of unexpected things this season: Dravid throwing his cap; MSD showing frustration in interview; Preity Zinta crying.”
Vas said: “Preity Zinta’s tears were the real strongest evidence that IPL final wasn’t fixed.”
KripaSwaminathan simply said: “Preity Zinta, it is time to sell you team KXIP. We do not want to see any more of your fake smile, fake cry, fake acting in the next IPL.”
Arya Zamaan said: “And finally, Kolkata Knight Riders took revenge from Preity Zinta for marrying Saif Ali Khan in ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’.”
Meanwhile, Khan fans also gushed with praise for the superstar when he donned the Kings XI Punjab jersey as tribute to the losing side.
Ashish said: “Touched by Shah Rukh gesture wearing KXIP jersey. That’s sportsmanship and true companionship. Something to be learned and adopted in life.”
Nikhil Ram wrote: “King Khan shows his love and respect for Preity Zinta by wearing the KXIP jersey. Take a bow. What a star!”
Rounak Agarwal said: “How does Shah Rukh talk so sweet effortlessly man! This man is phenomenal! Wearing the Punjab jersey was the icing! A father won tonight!”
