Doctors at the Maternity and Children's Hospital in Najran, Saudi Arabia, were able to perform a surgical intervention to save the life of a newborn baby with a congenital head defect. The operation, which lasted five hours, was a success.
The Najran Health Directorate said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Tuesday that the medical team treated the case due to a protrusion behind the skull. The necessary clinical and radiological examinations were performed, and the condition was diagnosed as a "meningocele," a protrusion and tumor that protrudes from the brain, often in the back of the skull. This is due to the failure of the neural tube to close in the fourth week of pregnancy, which causes this congenital defect.
The treatment team decided to perform a surgical intervention by opening the mass, dealing with the neural tissue, blood vessels, and restoring the sensitive tissue to its original position. The excess mass was removed, and the meningeal tissues of the brain were repaired. The baby was then transferred to the intensive care unit to receive medical care under the supervision of the medical and nursing team until the condition stabilized and she was discharged from the hospital
