Copenhagen Fashion Week turned the entire inner city into a mile long pink runway, setting a record for the world's longest catwalk, according to the Copenhagen Fashion Council, which organises the event.

Two hundred and twenty models walked down the Stroget, the Danish capital’s famous pedestrian street, under a steady rain on Saturday, presenting clothes from 500 Scandinavian fashion labels for next season.

At least three models took their stiletto heels off and completed the walk barefoot. More than 100,000 spectators lined the catwalk to watch the show, which employed 100 make-up and hair artists and cost 2.5 million kroner (Dh1.57m), organisers said.

Danish supermodel Helena Christensen opened the catwalk with a speech.

Copenhagen Fashion Week is the Nordic region's largest fashion event, attracting more than 50,000 buyers, designers and journalists to the Danish capital every February and August, according to Copenhagen Fashion Council.

But the industry and buyers aren't the only people invited. Tourists and Copenhageners can join the party when the Copenhagen Fashion Festival takes to the streets. Large parts of Copenhagen are transformed into a fashion Mecca of shows, exhibitions, concerts, trend shows and parties. And the "fashion for the people" concept also reflects Danish fashion.

It is earning a reputation for its unique angle on design, innovation and aesthetics and a modern approach to functionality. The clothes are wearable and affordable – often referred to as "democratic fashion."
