Corn flakes sold in the UAE contain iron but the level poses no threat to human health as it is compatible with regional and global standards, an official at Dubai municipality was quoted on Wednesday as saying.

Asia Abdul Wahab, head of food planning and studies at the municipality, was reacting to recent reports circulated on BlackBerry handsets warning that corn flakes contain iron discovered by a customer by mixing them in water and using a magnet to gather iron flings.

“We have already dealt with this issue and people are now repeating it…the level of iron mixed with corn flakes is compatible with global standards which set a maximum rate of 2.5 gm per 100 gm,” she told 'Al Bayan' Arabic language daily.

“The presence of iron flings in corn flakes when soaked in water is normal according to the 1994 specification in the GCC.”
