Abu Dhabi Corniche road partially shut

Abu Dhabi traffic authorities on Sunday shut one lane on both directions of the massive seaside Corniche road for renovation and expansion work.

The eight-week closure affected the strip between Baynounha street and Emirates Palace hotel and between Baynouna street and Sheikh Zayed 1 intersection on the seaside road. One lane was also closed between street 25 and Hazza junction on the Corniche.

“These lanes will remain closed for eight weeks due to expansion and renovation work,” the Abu Dhabi Transport Department said.

The Corniche, stretching nearly 6.5 km on the capital western coast, has undergone massive development over the past years to become one of the most attractive tourism and recreation destinations in the UAE.

The opening of a major beach two years ago largely boosted traffic on that road, prompted further expansion work. Another beach adjoining the existing one is set to be inaugurated this year.
