A decision by Abu Dhabi traffic police to cut down the speed limit on Abu Dhabi-Dubai motorway from 160 km per hour to 140kph will be enforced on Sunday.
The decision, which was announced last month, is intended to upgrade road safety following a series of deadly accidents over the past few months on the motorway, one of the busiest streets in the UAE.
Police had set April 17 as the date for enforcing the new rule, which means that motorists travelling at 141kph would be hunted by the speed cameras dotting the Abu Dhabi-Dubai motorway in both directions.
According to police sources, an average 9,000 vehicles use the 100km road stretch between the two cities per hour at peak time.
“Drivers are called upon to abide by the new speed limits to ensure their safety and protect the lives of other road users,” police said in a statement, adding that heavy duty trucks must also abide by the 80kph speed limit.
