Twenty-eight people were killed and 25 seriously injured in road accidents in Dubai during the first 10 months of this year.

Ninety people suffered moderate injuries while 117 sustained minor injuries during this period, according to statistics of the Dubai Traffic Police.

Though the number of deaths had dropped to 28 from 33 in the same period of the previous year, the mortality rate in road accidents remains high, according to Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zaffin, director of the General Department of Dubai Traffic Police.

Sudden change of lane was a major cause of fatal accidents, leading to deaths of 17 people during the first 10 months of this year, followed by driving under the influence of alcohol which led to 11 deaths, Maj Gen Al Zaffin said. Jumping the red signal and speeding led to nine deaths each during the same period.

He added that the Dubai Traffic Police is conducting studies to find the causes of fatal accidents and ways of avoiding accidents.

Dubai Traffic Police is striving to achieve its goal of ‘zero accident death’ by the year 2020, Maj Gen Al Zaffin said.
