Meat prices have sharply increased over the past few days following relative stability last Ramadan because of price curbs imposed by the Ministry of Economy during the fasting month.

Dealers attributed the increase by nearly 20 per cent in the prices of some imported meat to higher costs in exporting countries and expected prices to continue their rise in the coming few days.

According to Alkhaleej newspaper, the price of Australian meat soared by around Dhfive to Dh32 per kilo from Dh27, an increase of nearly 20 per cent.

The price of Indian meat swelled by Dhtwo to Dh27 while that of New Zealand mutton increased by Dhfive to Dh22 per kilo, the paper said.

“Other kinds of meat recorded marked increases ranging between Dhtwo and Dhthree in all Abu Dhabi meat shops,” the paper said.

It quoted dealers as saying they had been told by suppliers that the increase in prices was due to higher prices at countries of origin and that they should expect fresh price increases in the coming days.

“Supplying companies have raised their prices in the past period…I raised my prices after my stuff became costlier,” said Sharif Qadir, a meat dealer.
