A Dubai Customs inspection team at Cargo Village has seized 8kg of opium hidden in a shipment coming in from an Asian country, heading to a European country.

Omar Almuhairi, Senior Manager of Cargo Village Air Operations at Dubai Customs, explained that the shipment contained leather handbags and weighed 24kg.

The customs inspector suspected the contents and an x-ray imaging system showed anomalies.

Officers subsequently conducted a manual search and extracted a dark coloured substance with characteristics of opium stuffed along the periphery inside some bags.

After using a drug-sniffing dog, the shipment was identified as containing narcotics.

This was then confirmed by a customs lab report.

Within the framework of mutual cooperation with Dubai Police General Directorate of Anti-Narcotic, the seizures report and the contraband were referred for necessary actions and procedures.
