Drunk driving killed three people and injured 71 on Dubai roads in the first 10 months of this year while 207 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Emirate’s traffic police chief.
Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen said drunk driving caused 297 road accidents in Dubai in the first 10 months.
“These accidents resulted in the death of three people and the injury of 71…were also impounded 207 vehicles after their drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said, quoted by Emarat Alyoum daily on Saturday.
He said the number of accidents and casualties this year was much lower than in the same period of 2009, when 13 people were killed in 352 accidents.
“The decline was a result of an extensive police campaign to curb drunk driving in the emirate…the campaign was prompted by the surge in such accidents and casualties last year,” he said.
Zafeen said Dubai’s traffic police have been supplied with new systems to test drivers for alcohol on the spot.
