A new electronic device that warns motorists if they are parking illegally in a parking zone reserved for the handicapped will be used by the Dubai Police.
Dubbed the ‘Sergeant’, the device will use a radar to detect offending vehicles.
Making the announcement on Monday, June 16, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazinah, Commander of Dubai Police, said the radar will help vehicles stay clear of handicapped parking zones with a loud alarm going off for 20 seconds.
Major General Mazinah added that the device has been created by Dubai Police, who are currently seeking a patent for it.
He added that Dubai Police along with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will seek to roll the same out across all malls in the emirate.
The device also has a camera to capture the offending vehicles, further documenting the violation.
Information is sent immediately to the Dubai Police operating room.
He pointed out that Dubai government pays much attention to the rights of the disabled in keeping with the directions of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazrouei, Director General, Directorate of Traffic, Dubai Police, confirmed that the police recorded 36,858 parking violation in disabled zones during the past four years.
Mazrouei said that penalty for illegal parking in a disabled zone can go up to Dh1,000 and 4 black points.
