The Dubai Government has taken a decision to unify public transport tariffs, subsidise fares for older people, beneficiaries of social aid and students and exempt children and disabled people.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, has issued resolution No. (29) of 2014, amending resolution No. (3) of 2009 on Dubai’s public transport tariff.

The new decision aims to encourage various community segments to use public transportation systems by organising and facilitating fare collection and in line with the leadership’s directives to transform Dubai into a smart city. Additionally, the resolution aims to subsidise transportation fares for selected segments like older people, beneficiaries of social aid and students.

Article (1) of the new decision substitutes the term 'Decision' with 'Regulation' wherever it appears in Regulation No (3) of 2009 on Dubai’s unified public transport tariff, its rules and regulations and amendments.

Article (2) of the new resolution prescribed the means of transportation, facilities and services subject to the tariff, the unified discounted fares and beneficiaries.

Article (4) stated that the usage of public transportation within the defined domains is subject to a unified tariff and divided into three tiers.

The first tier applies to the trips that start and end in the same domain or to the trips that does not exceed 3km, the second tire applies to the trips start in a domain and finishes in an adjacent domain and the third tier applies to the trips that exceed three domains or more. The decree’s rules and regulations define the designs of the unified paper tickets and electronic cards and the information included in the tickets and cards.

Article (7) of the new resolution stated that students, older people and beneficiaries of social aid are granted discounted fares when using 'Regular Class'. If they use the electronic cards, then the prices vary between Dh1.50 and Dh3.75. While Article (8) stated that children under 5 years and people with special need are exempted from the new unified transport tariff.

The decision is expected to facilitate usage of public transportation systems in Dubai by diversifying fares’ options, which will positively impact the service. The decision is to be published in the Official Gazette and deemed valid from the date of publication.
